Emergency Medical Technician Course

This course offers an increased knowledge and skills in the assessment of trauma and medical emergencies in the pre hospital care environment using both techniques and equipment beyond the usual scope of First Aid.

Who Should Attend?
This course is suitable for anyone who may have to manage medical or trauma patients within the pre hospital care field in particular event medical cover personnel, private ambulance staff and current First Aiders who are wishing to extend their knowledge and skills.
It is a pre requisite that all delegates must show evidence of current First Aid training (First Aid at Work as a minimum standard) and hold this qualification for a minimum of one year.

Learning Outcome
Knowledge and practice of pre hospital emergency care skills using both equipment and techniques and equipment beyond the usual scope of First Aid.

Course Content
Delegates will receive training in the following pre hospital care topics: -

• Mechanism of injury and scene assessment
• Airway management including the use of oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal and laryngeal mask airways
• Oxygen and Entonox administration
• Automated External Defibrillation
• Primary and Secondary Patient Assessment
• Vital signs monitoring
• Assessment and management of medical emergencies including heart attack, angina, stroke, anaphylaxis, diabetes, epilepsy and cardiogenic shock
• Assessment and management of trauma emergencies including chest, abdominal and limb trauma, hypovolaemic shock, burns, head and spinal trauma including the use of long boards, collars and head blocks and trauma in pregnancy
• Use of orthopaedic scoop stretchers, extrication devices and the application of splints

Assessment & Certification
Assessment will be carried out by an independent assessor on the fifth day of the course. On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive an Emergency Medical Technician certificate of competence which is valid for two years.
